Good question. And one I should have expected from you!
Since this photo was from my first semester at Brown, I think I brought the poster with me from Phoenix. It is likely for the underground movie series at the Valley Art Theatre, in Tempe (near Arizona State U). I had gone there (midnights on the weekends) as frequently as I could when I was in high school.
This was before ROCKY HORROR made midnight movies explode. So I didn't see that there, but instead the Valley Art showed pretty avant garde stuff (especially for the Phoenix area)--shorts by Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey, Robert Frank, John Waters, Sally Cruikshank, The Cockettes, maybe even Stan Brakhage. Oh, and also classics like FREAKS and REEFER MADNESS.
The Valley Art definitely shaped my cinematic tastes before I arrived at the Brown Film Society!
Nice photo. I never doomed. I went to a comuter school
Thanks!
What was the movie theater?
